This book design is a contemporary reinterpretation of Rashōmon, one of Ryūnosuke Akutagawa’s most iconic short stories. The book cover uses stark black and white tones and features a heavily textured, almost eroded background image of the Rashōmon gate.

Rather than presenting the gate in a literal or easily identifiable form, it is rendered abstractly, like a photographic memory deteriorating over time. The visual treatment echoes the story’s themes of decay, uncertainty, and moral collapse.

The large, vertically set title 羅生門 dominates the front cover, with its strokes sharply extended and compressed to mimic the typographic style of earlier Japanese newspapers. This approach draws a connection to the visual culture of mass printing and reportage. The character 門 (gate) at the bottom visually resembles a gate structure itself, reinforcing the piece’s central metaphor.

本書の装丁は、芥川龍之介の代表作のひとつである『羅生門』を現代的に再解釈したものです。表紙はモノトーンの配色を基調とし、背景には激しく風化したような羅生門のイメージが施されています。この門は、誰の目にもすぐには「門」とは認識されない抽象的な形で描かれており、時間の中で朽ちていく記憶写真のような視覚効果を生んでいます。この視覚処理は、作品に通底する「崩壊」「不確かさ」「道徳の喪失」といったテーマと共鳴しています。
